The phenomenon of “true cosolvency”, which has only recently been observed in the system acetone/diethyl ether/polystyrene (AC/DEE/PS), is investigated with regard to its pressure dependence and compared with the thermodynamic behaviour of the corresponding binary sub-systems. For the determination of the limits of complete solubility, a pressure apparatus was used which had been constructed, in order to measure the turbidity of fluids in the temperature range of −70 to +500°Cand in the pressure range of 1 to 4000 bar (105 to 4·108 Nm−2). The critical line observed for the system DEE/PS (MPS=20400) looks similar to that reported for AC/PS in the literature, i.e. the upper critical solution …

Size dependence of the Josephson critical behavior in pyrolytic graphite TEM lamellae

2014

We have studied the transport characteristics of TEM lamellae of different widths obtained from a graphite sample with electrical contacts at the edges of the embedded interfaces. The temperature dependence of the resistance, as well as the current-voltage characteristics, are compatible with the existence of Josephson-coupled superconducting regions. The transition temperature at which the Josephson behavior sets in decreases with a decreasing interface width and vanishes for widths below 200 nm. This interface-size dependence provides an explanation for differences observed in the transport behavior of graphite-based samples with interfaces, and it appears to be related to the influence o…

The euro impact on trade. Long run evidence with structural breaks

2012

In this paper we present new evidence on the euro effect on trade. We use a data set containing all bilateral combinations in a panel of 26 OECD countries during the period 1967-2008. From a methodological point of view, we implement a new generation of tests that allow solving some of the problems derived from the non-stationary nature of the data. To this aim we apply panel tests that account for the presence of cross-section dependence as well as discontinuities in the non-stationary panel data. We test for cointegration between the variables using panel cointegration tests, especially the ones proposed by Banerjee and Carrióni- Silvestre (2010). We also efficiently estimate the long-run…

“Puffy hand syndrome”

2016

Poczucie jakości życia i samoocena pacjentów w trakcie terapii uzależnienia od alkoholu

2018

During the addiction therapy patients describes a sense of emptiness, low level of life satisfaction and diffi culties in enjoying their lives. Those problems often caused them to return to psychoactive substance use. The research presented in the article is aimed at checking the dynamics of the above constructs during addiction therapy, which may help to better understand the treatment process. A longitudinal study of alcohol dependent patients in the process of addiction therapy was conducted. The research questionnaires measured selected aspects of psychological well-being as general construct and specifi c subscales. The fi rst measurement was made at the beginning ofa patient’s addicti…

Pressure influences on the viscosity of polymer solutions

1982

Of all physico-chemical quantities characterizing the behavior of liquids, the viscosity coefficient η is normally most sensitive to pressure. Early measurements of η(p) date back almost 100 years [1] but they were carried out with very different objectives [2]. Currently, one is particularly interested in polymer solutions, for instance because of the additives to motor oils and of oil recovery. The present paper reports on measurements with polystyrenes of high molecular uniformity in eight different solvents. It confines itself to zero-shear viscosities and discusses the possibilities of discovering the influence of pressure via the molecular structure of the solvent and via its thermody…

Sex differences in behavioral traits related with high sensitivity to the reinforcing effects of cocaine

2021

Cocaine is the most prevalent illegal stimulant drug in Europe among the adult population. Its abuse is characterized by a faster substance abuse disorder (SUD) development than other drugs, with high vulnerability to relapse. However, there does not exist an effective treatment for cocaine dependence. Sex differences have been reported in psychological disorders including SUD. For this reason, it is essential to identify risk factors that predict susceptibility or resilience to cocaine addiction for the development of effective prevention strategies considering sex differences. In the present study, the main objective was to determine more sensitive phenotypes to the conditioned reinforcin…

A Spatial Econometric Analysis of Convergence Across European Regions, 1980–1995

2003

The convergence of European regions has been largely discussed in the macroeconomic and the regional science literature during the past decade. Two observations are often emphasized. First, the convergence rate among European regions appears to be very slow in the extensive samples considered (Barro and Sala-iMartin 1991, 1995; Armstrong 1995a; Sala-i-Martin 1996a, 1996b). Second, as shown in Ertur and Le Gallo (see Chap. 2), the geographical distribution of European per capita GDP is highly clustered.

The effect of buyer specific-monitoring procedures on buyer control in dynamic supply chain links

2015

Based on transaction cost analysis (TCA), resource dependency theory (RDT), and supply chain management literature, this study explores the effect of buyer-specific monitoring procedures on buyer control in industrial buyer-seller transactions, particularly in relation to how environmental uncertainty affects the buying firm's ability to exercise control over the supplier firm. The research design is based on primary data from a survey of 168 industrial buyer-seller relationships which map a broad set of dimensions of the economic transactions and structures in these business-to-business relationships. The empirical findings provide support for the hypotheses, and demonstrate that the effec…

Pressure-dependent modifications in the optical and electronic properties of Fe(IO3)3: the role of Fe 3d and I 5p lone–pair electrons

2021

We have determined by means of optical-absorption experiments that Fe(IO3)3 is an indirect band-gap material with a band-gap energy of 2.1 eV. This makes this compound the iodate with the smallest band gap. We also found that under compression the band-gap energy has an unusual non-linear pressure dependence, which is followed by an abrupt and discontinuous decrease of the band gap at 24 GPa. The observed behavior is explained by means of density-functional calculations, which show that the behavior of the band gap is governed by the combined influence of Fe 4d and I 5p lone pair electrons. In addition, the abrupt decrease of the band-gap energy at 24 GPa is a consequence of a first-order s…
